Car Rental Abu Dhabi Requirements
There is paperwork to sort through before you can rent a car in Abu Dhabi. The law requires that a driver should be at least 21 years old to rent a vehicle. Nationals must present their UAE ID card and driver’s license. Visitors, on the other hand, should present an international driver’s permit, driving license, credit card and passport.
If a visitor is from one of the Gulf Cooperation Council countries (GCC) or a European country, there is no need for an International Driving License. As long as you are on a tourist visa, you can drive with their standard driving license.
Meanwhile, those who are not from a European country or any of the GCC would have to secure an International Driving Permit (IDP) from their home country. Make sure to carry all requirements all the time when driving around the UAE.
Rent a Car Abu Dhabi Road Rules
One should respect the rules of the road in the Emirates in order to avoid safety issues and serious fines. Of course, you are required to wear your seatbelts. Speed limits may vary on the motorway so be on the lookout for signs.
Most rental companies allow clients to take their rental cars out of Abu Dhabi and explore more of the UAE. But be sure to clear this up with your provider first.
Electronic road tolls are applicable in the UAE. You will be automatically charged through a Salik tag on your windscreen. What rental companies do is place a deposit on your credit card for these tolls. Upon return, they will only charge you for all the tolls you went through during your rental period.
The most important rule is to not drink and drive. The law states that blood alcohol level has to be 0 for a driver. Otherwise, you can get fined for up to Dh20,000 or risk being deported or worse, spending some time in jail.
